Tangihau 672 purchased by John Bayly NZ for $40000 in 2009.

We had pretty firm ideas about what we were looking for this year and fortunately there were two bulls that really stood out, not just for us but for many of the NZers as well. Rick and Andrew Powdrell of Turiroa stud have bred many outstanding cattle including Burke 22 who we have used here at Glengowan. They are terrific judges of cattle and have a knack of seeking out the top bulls.  This year they had their eye on lot 5 at Stern who is all meat and volume with excellent structure and temperament. We agreed and we were lucky enough to form a partnership with the Powdrells and Mel and Nicky Story of Ratanui stud in the North Island and together we purchased lot 5, Stern 0768.  Ross Thompson from Millah Murrah stud near Bathurst was the guest judge at the sale and he too was impressed with lot 5.

The Gisborne Combined sale is a great showcase of North Island cattle with studs all vying for the ‘Wonder Cup’ which has been awarded there for 74 years. This year the Champion Bull was Tangihau 672 , a magnificent, strong, meaty bull who was the talk of the North Island. On the day he sold for $41000 to the Cricklewood stud. As our partnership was the underbidder, the owner Mr John Bayley was good enough to let Glengowan purchase the semen rights for Australia. This bull in particular we think will be a huge asset to Glengowan as he is moderately framed and very correct with a ton of meat and an exceptional temperament. He has a great presence and style and I confess- I am really impressed. He is the type of bull we have been searching for over several years and we think he will compliment our herd very well. We already have a long association with Tangihau as Stuart bought the semen rights for Tangihau 150 back in 1996 and we have some wonderful daughters still in our herd. It was interesting to note Tangihau 150 semen is still being used in NZ and his progeny are very highly regarded there. We are confident that 672 will be as successful here.
